Elkdale Baptist Church - Chamber Member of the Week

Congratulations, Elkdale Baptist Church, for being selected as our newest Chamber Member of the Week!

Inside the fellowship hall
Elkdale Baptist Church started when a group from First Baptist Church began a prayer group that met at Elkdale Park.  Shortly after, they began meeting in homes and found a need for a church in North Selma.  The church was officially planted in 1953 and the 63 charter members put their money together for a building, which is now the fellowship hall at the church.  Six of the charter members are still living and active members in the church.

Elkdale has something for everyone including a traditional Sunday service, contemporary Sunday service, small groups, and mission opportunities.  The traditional service is on Sundays at 8:30 am and is led by Guy Anderson and the choir.  The contemporary service is on Sundays at 11:00 am and is led by John Andrew Castleberry and the Elkdale Worship Band.  Small groups for men, women, co-ed, youth, and children meet on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm in a variety of areas in the church.  There is also an optional meal that is served at 5:15 pm on Wednesday nights.

If you have a heart for missions, Elkdale has a large selection of mission opportunities.
The current pastor developed the Acts 1:8 plan for the church that has become their mission.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” - Acts 1:8, NIV
The mission is to take the Gospel into our city, state, country, and to the ends of the earth.  Elkdale has developed a relationship with Edgewood Elementary School, which is right across the street from the church.  They have a partnership with Sav-a-Life, a pregnancy care ministry dedicated to offering free and confidential services in a loving environment to women, men, and families facing an unplanned pregnancy.  Elkdale partners with Laurel Lakes Baptist Camp in Corbin, Kentucky each summer for their faith family mission trips.  Last year their mission team consisted of 60 people ranging from age 18 months to 78!  They have also partnered with a church planter in Guatemala and the church takes mission teams there each year to help churches get started in a community that does not have a significant church presence.

Another unique aspect of Elkdale is its Faith Family Blessings ministry.  Its purpose is for the church to join with the family from the child's birth to their high school graduation.  They believe there are seven essential blessings that are essential for every family in order for one generation to pass their faith on to the next generation.

  1. Parent/Baby Dedication
  2. Salvation and Baptism
  3. Scripture Memory
  4. Purity for Life
  5. Rite of Passage
  6. Written Blessing
  7. Family Mission Trip

Once a quarter Elkdale offers seminars for these blessings so that parents can be one step ahead of the crucial moments in their child's life.

Thomas Accounting and Income Tax Service - Chamber Member of the Week

Congratulations, Thomas Accounting and Income Tax Service, LLC, for being randomly selected as Chamber Member of the Week!

Thomas Accounting and Income Tax Service, LLC is owned by Daryl Thomas (pictured right) and was started about 15 years ago.  It began in college when he did tax returns for fellow students, then it became a side business for him when he got a full-time job.  In 2009, Daryl started working for his business full-time.

Daryl does every type of accounting service including payroll taxes, income tax returns, quarterly reports, and much more.  At the end of the income tax season, anyone who chose to use his services is then entered in a drawing for a 42" TV!  Plus, he says that his prices are lower than other accountants in the area.

Mr. Thomas chose to join the Chamber of Commerce because he wanted to be involved in the community and help improve the quality of life in Selma.  He loves that the Chamber provides a way for businesses to come together and collaborate and that it hosts events for socialization with those businesses.

"Being a member [of the Chamber] provides a valuable asset to your business... they can direct clients to your business." -Daryl Thomas

Be sure to visit him and use his accounting and income tax services!

Junebugg's - Chamber Member of the Week

Our new Chamber Member of the week is... Junebugg's Flea and Antique Mall!

Junebugg's is owned by Tommy and June Carter (pictured left).  June had asked her husband for 30 years to start an antique mall, but he already had a full-time job and it just wasn't the right time.  Then in August 2009 (on Tommy's birthday), the opportunity came for them to start their own business.  Instead of an antique mall, however, they decided to open a flea market and antique mall inside what used to be a Food World.  The couple named the store Junebugg's after June Carter, whose nickname is "Junebugg."

They sell a variety of items such as antiques and collectibles, but they have a little bit of everything.  Shoppers can find almost anything in this store!  Junebugg's has areas all over the store sectioned off and they rent the "booth space" to vendors each month.  At any given time there will be 175 - 200 vendors set up in the store selling their specialized, handmade, or collectible items and just about anything imaginable.  While the store as a whole does not offer sales, individual booths may have a sale when you stop in.

If you've ever been in Junebugg's, you may have noticed the "Fish Room" and the "Bargain Barn."  The Fish Room sells a variety of fish, turtles, frogs, guinea pigs, and more!  The Bargain Barn has a large selection of fabrics and other items.

They literally have hundreds of thousands of items in their store.  You don't want to miss out on discovering the unique items at Junebugg's, so be sure to check it out!

Walgreens - Chamber Member of the Week

Congratulations, Walgreens, for being our Chamber Member of the Week!

Walgreens is the largest drugstore chain in the United States and operates in all 50 states.  Chris Rudolf is the store manager for the Selma Walgreens, which has been at its current location since November 2006.

Walgreens is complete with a photo center and pharmacy and they are an HIV center of excellence, which means that they provide many medications that HIV patients can't find everywhere.  Their pharmacists also work with you and your doctor to ensure that your safety and wellness is the number one priority.

The company sells all types of products such as bottled water, prescription drugs, beauty products, groceries, and much more; however, they specialize in retail clinical services and immunizations.  Walgreens is currently offering flu shots and encourages everyone - especially businesspeople, education employees, and seniors - to come in to get a flu shot.

Football season is in full swing and Walgreens carries both Alabama and Auburn merchandise to help you get your head in the game.  They also have many Halloween specials for those of you that like to get a head start on your holiday shopping.

You probably didn't know this, but the first Wednesday of every month, Walgreens has a Senior Savings Day.  If you are 55 or older or an AARP member, Walgreens will give you 20% off of your purchase!

We also talked to Chris Rudolf about being a Chamber member.  He said he likes being a Chamber member because of the ability to reach out to the community and know what is going on.
"It's nice to get updates [on events] every week so we can participate and let people know what we have to offer and how we can help out." - Chris Rudolf
